The engineering discipline is one of the four pillars of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education. The scope of study of engineering courses extends to the application of science and mathematics concepts to solve the problems of the real world through building and designing things. The term ‘engineering’ has stemmed from the Latin word ‘ingenium’ and ‘ingenaire’ which means cleverness and to devise respectively. This field of study relies primarily on logical, creative, and rational thinking skills. Engineers evaluate, design, develop, test and modify a variety of products right from giant bridges, tunnels, highways, and machines to small cell membranes and robust software applications. An engineer’s degree entails planning, process and overlooking the manufacturing of things to consulting or teaching the art of engineering to the students and trainees. Famous examples of engineering wonders around the world include the Pyramids of Giza, The Colosseum, Machu Picchu, Stirling Castle, etc. In the past couple of years, the most in-demand jobs in engineering jobs were Data Science and Machine Learning, Automation and Robotics Engineering, Civil Engineers, Petroleum Engineers, Alternative Energy Engineers, Project Engineers, etc.

The world is constantly progressing and becoming more and more technologically sound. Thanks to engineers and scientists who continue to make human life better with the help of technology. Consequently, engineering courses remain to be one of the top choices for higher studies, especially in India. It also offers stable career choices to the students interested in the field of engineering. The reason is the high demand for engineers in almost every field. The individuals having engineer’s degree have to be imaginative, think out of the box and logically to solve problems and do their work. The students who are inquisitive, like to explore and have an inclination towards inventing and discovering new things/ideas may opt for engineering courses.

The engineering course eligibility varies for different program levels and depends on criteria set by different partner institutes. However, general eligibility criteria for different program levels of engineering are as follows:
Eligibility for UG Engineering Course:
The UG level engineering course is called B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology)/ B.E (Bachelor of Engineering). The students can pursue UG engineering courses after completing their 10+2 in the Science stream (with a subject combination of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Biology, depending upon the choice of course). Most of these engineering courses offer stable career options as many industries like automobile, IT and even the finance sector rely on one or the other type of engineer for successful operation.
Eligibility for PG Engineering Course:
The PG level engineering course is called M.Tech (Masters in Technology)/M.E (Master in Engineering). The students can pursue their PG engineering courses after completing B.Tech or undergraduate engineer’s degree. Along with the theoretical study of the engineering course chosen by the students, they are also taught project management skills, analytical and problem-solving skills, communication as well as creative skills. These skill sets help students in their respective career fields.
Eligibility for PhD Engineering Course:
The students can pursue doctorate level engineering courses after completing their post-graduation in the concerned branch or other related fields.
**Note: The eligibility for various engineering courses differ across different institutes. Therefore, students should check the eligibility requirements at the time of applying through the ‘Courses’ tab.

The subject and syllabus of the engineering courses depend on the branch a student chooses for the higher education and it also differs across various partner institutes. However, a general overview of the same is as follows:
UG Level:
During the 4-year course duration of B.Tech or BE the students are taught a mix of general engineering concepts and branch-specific topics. However, some of the core topics/concepts covered during a B.Tech or BE course are:
Engineering Mechanics
Structural Analysis
Engineering Physics
Machine Design
Basic Electronics
Machine Design
Digital Electronics
Communication Protocols, etc

PG Level:
The 2-year engineering courses (M.Tech or M.E) focuss on the study of different technologies of specific engineering branches/specialisations such as civil engineering, chemical engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, electronics and communication engineering, etc. Although the subjects and syllabus differ as per the branch the students opt for, however, some core concepts include
Physical Sciences
Statics and Dynamics
Mathematics
Electrical Structures
Electronics Designing
Laboratory Practice
Nano-technology, etc

The students aspiring to make a career in the field of engineering and technology can pursue engineering courses across three disciplines by applying to Study in India Programme. The step by step process to apply is

1- At first the students need to become a part of the Study in India Programme by filling out the Registration. Followed by the registration the students are provided with the login credentials that they need to save for future reference.

2- Once registration is complete, the students will have to fill out the SII Application which is divided into three parts: Basic Information, Academic Information and Choice Filling.

3- Although the students have to fill all the three-section carefully, it is the Choice Filling that is the most important part. They are required to give and rank a minimum of three preferences for Engineering courses and institutes they are interested to take admission.

4- Lastly, they are required to fill out the declaration form and submit their respective applications.

For taking admission in most of the engineering branches/subjects, mathematics is necessary for class 12th. You may refer to the Study in India website while applying to check the eligibility requirements of different institutes.

The duration of Engineering courses depends on different program levels. For B.Tech courses, it is 4 years, for M.Tech courses, it is 2 years and for PhD courses, it ranges from 3-6 years.
